Structural Steel Estimating Services

When starting a construction business as a contractor, one always thinks about working in such a trade that is the most important and highly profitable in the industry. Contractors start structural steelwork due to its importance in every high-rise and residential building. Every high-rise structure in the USA and around the globe is incomplete without structural steel elements. Structural steel structures are more earthquake resistant, have lower values of dead loads, are highly efficient and can be built in significantly less time than RCC structures. These characteristics make steel structures more reliable and cheaper than RCC Structures, as they save a lot of time and money.

Before starting the structural steel construction process, bidding is a crucial step in deciding the success or failure of the steel contractor. Bidding should always be accurate to achieve higher gains in the construction market. So, how should a steel contractor ensure he is putting correct numbers against the bidding for a steel job? Here comes BIDWINSOLUTIONS to save the day for our structural steel clients.

With over seven years of experience in structural steel estimating for hundreds of trade-specific steel clients, we own the crown for being the successful company in achieving the highest bid-win ratio with remarkable profits in steel structures. How BIDWINSOLUTIONS do that?

We follow a two-step strategy to be the best choice for our streel contractors. In step one, we ensure that our steel estimating takeoffs are 100% accurate and eliminate any chance for a single error. We do that by a drop-down approach of the estimator’s review process in which a steel estimator will thoroughly review the structural and architectural drawings, do markings on Plan Swift, which is a material takeoffs software, prepare an Excel spreadsheet with all the structural steel takeoffs as per their specifications, and then a senior steel estimator will review the complete job to omit any errors. In step two, we calculate material and labor prices for steel members from fabrication and erection hours based on labor and equipment on-field productivity.

Components of Structural Steel & Miscellaneous Steel Works

The building is usually divided into two components in terms of steelworks. The very first one is structural steel members, which are load-bearing components of a high-rise or residential building that includes, Beams, Columns, Bracings, Angles, Channels Joist Girders, Deck and non-load bearing elements which are called Miscellaneous steelwork Stairs, Ladders, Railings, Site steel items, Bollards, Canopies. Steel estimator must look into structural drawings for the load-bearing members and most of the times, architectural drawings for no-load-bearing members like miscellaneous metals. Let’s talk about these components in detail.

  • Structural Steel Beams are primarily designed as W-sections and HSS sections. W-section beams are specified as W10x40 and W12x60, in which the first number after the W alphabet is depth in inches, and the second number after the multiplication sign is the unit weight of the steel beam. HSS sections are rarely used for beams, and they are specified as HSS3x3x1/4 and many other sizes and unit weights.
  • Steel Columns are horizontal elements in steel structures. They carry the load of beams and transfer it to the concrete piers and footings. They are used as both W-sections and Hollow sections in the building.
  • Steel bracings are primarily used in steel designs to distribute bending effects between the beams and to resist the lateral forces of wind and earthquake. Steel bracings are used in the form of steel channels and angles like C12x30 and L2x2x1/4.
  • Structural Steel Deck plays a crucial role in transferring the live load of the building to the beams and columns. Loading carrying capacity for a deck depends on the gauge and thickness. Decks are generally composite metal decks and metal form decks. Deck gauges specify the thickness of steel sheets and vary from 16 gauge, 18 gauge up to 22 Gauge. Deck depth ranges from 0.5inch to 3inches. A pour stop covers the deck’s perimeter in case of concrete pouring.
  • Steel Stairs: The architect and structural engineer prefer steel stairs in most commercial and residential multistory projects because steel stairs filled with concrete are cost-effective, time-saving, have low weights and are easy to install. Steel stairs assembly includes Steel Stair Stringer, Steel Treads & Risers, Handrails and Guardrails, Steel Landing and supports, Angle clips and plate runners, and stair nosing. Steel stairs are a significant component in Structural Steel Miscellaneous bid.
  • Handrails & Guardrails are significant items in Miscellaneous metals jobs. They can be steel, aluminium, stainless steel or sometimes wrought iron. Guardrails act as barriers along any unprotected edge of the walking surface to prevent anyone from falling. In most cases, the guardrail is 42 inches high with steel pickets. Similarly, handrails fulfil their support function for people going up and down the stairs. Handrails are wall-mounted with brackets usually 36 to 42 inches above the ground, and guardrails are floor-mounted with steel or aluminium posts.
  • Steel or Aluminum Ladders are used as Elevator pit ladders, roof ladders with or without safety cages, and sometimes for platform access. Steel Ladders are crucial for miscellaneous metals projects as they are expensive.

Specialized in Steel Estimating Takeoffs and Pricing

Steel estimating is a complex trade requiring years of experience in Steel Estimating and on-field practical experience for accurate takeoffs and pricing. Steel pricing is divided into several steps requiring meticulous care to win a job. With over ten years of experience in the construction and estimating industry, BIDWINSOLUTIONS offers a team of highly specialized steel estimators who leave no stone unturned to win steel projects with high profits. The first step is to calculate each structural steel element from the Structural drawings set, comparing it with the architectural drawings and project specifications and then calculating the miscellaneous structural steel items from the architectural drawings.

As mentioned above in the component of structural steel and miscellaneous steel works section, every member of structural steel and miscellaneous steel is calculated and priced in different units. For example, Structural steel members like beams, columns, bracings, channels and angles are first calculated in each count as per their member lengths; these counts and lengths are then multiplied with their unit weights to get total weights. This weight can be priced in pounds or tonnage depending upon the client’s requirement.

Pricing is divided into three components for steel jobs. The first is the material price for steel elements in tonnage per steel specification. Steel can be mild with a simple paint finish, galvanized or Stainless steel. In many cases, fireproofing is also required for structural steel beams and columns, increasing the material price. The Galvanized steel finish costs $1000-$1200 more than mild steel. Stainless steel adds a lot in material price as it is way more expensive than mild steel.

The second step is calculating the fabrication price for structural and miscellaneous steel items. Fabrication price includes the cost of labor hours to fabricate the steel members, steel wastage in the fabrication process, and fabrication drawings cost. Labor hours are different for different steel components, i.e. W-section steel beams and columns usually take 14-18 hours for a tonnage fabrication, whereas HSS sections, angles and C-channels require 20-24 labor hours per ton for fabrication.

The third and most crucial step is the Structural and Miscellaneous steel erection price. It is a complex costing procedure in which the structural steel estimator must have a keen knowledge of the Steel crew, steel crew productivity, Crane scissor lifts and extending forklift prices and productivity, and the nature of the steel job, whether renovation or new construction. Renovation jobs take more labor hours for erection as compared to new construction. A steel estimator must be well equipped with on-site project management knowledge, as there will be delays in the construction activities, which can marginally affect the cost of a steel project.
